The Effects of Communication

As words come out of a singer’s mouth, one by one, a story is told. As McLuhan explains, when reading from left to right each word is connected to the next. The string of words get longer and longer depending on the length of the piece of writing, and the words start making sense because of how they are related to one another. Reading is a way of communicating, just as singing is another form of communicating. McLuhan explains how all messages are perceived differently depending upon which medium the message is received through. For example, when listening to a song through the radio you may not get the full effect as you may when you are watching the music video on TV; this is because you are physically able to visualize what the singer is talking about. When listening to a song, the tone of the singers voice changes depending on how they want you to hear each word and the chorus is repeated over and over, so the listener knows what the song is saying without having to read between the lines.
